How Much Does a Website Cost in South Africa? What Actually Drives the Price

By Catallyst Labs · Updated · 7 min read

Ask five web developers in South Africa what a website costs and you may get five very different answers. That is not because anyone is being unreasonable. "A website" can mean a one-page site for a new plumber or a custom online store with thousands of products, stock syncing and PayFast integration, and those are very different projects.

This guide explains the factors that actually drive the price, the ongoing costs people forget to budget for, and how to brief a developer so the quote you get matches what you need.

1. What type of website do you need?

The single biggest factor is what the website has to do. Most projects fall into one of a few types:

  • Landing page: a single focused page for a campaign, product or service, built to get one action such as a call or a quote request.
  • Business website: typically 5 to 10 pages such as Home, About, Services, Portfolio and Contact. This is what most service businesses need.
  • E-commerce store: product listings, a cart, checkout and local payment gateways such as Paystack or PayFast, plus order and stock management.
  • Web application: custom functionality such as client portals, booking systems, dashboards or internal tools, usually with user accounts and a database.

2. Number of pages and how much content you have

More pages means more design, more build time and more content. Content is the factor people underestimate most. If you already have clear text and good photos for every page, the project moves faster. If the developer needs to write copy, source images or rewrite old content for SEO, that is extra work and should be in the quote.

3. Template or custom design

A site built on a pre-made template is quicker and cheaper, but it will look similar to other sites using the same template and can be harder to adapt later. A custom design is created around your brand, your customers and the actions you want them to take. It costs more up front, but it usually converts better and is easier to grow.

If your brand itself needs work, it is worth deciding that before the website. Building a site on a logo you are about to replace means paying twice. See our guide on brand refresh vs rebrand.

4. Features and integrations

Every feature adds design, development and testing time. Common ones include:

  • Online payments (Paystack, PayFast, Yoco, EFT options)
  • Booking or appointment scheduling
  • A content management system (CMS) so your team can update pages and blog posts
  • Client logins, portals or member areas
  • Integrations with CRMs, accounting software, email marketing tools or WhatsApp
  • Multiple languages

5. SEO and performance

A website that nobody finds does not earn its cost back. A properly built site includes the SEO foundations Google expects: unique page titles and descriptions, a clear heading structure, fast loading on mobile data, structured data, a sitemap and clean URLs. Ask whether these are included, because some cheaper quotes leave them out.

If you are replacing an existing site, moving it without losing your Google rankings is its own piece of work. We cover it in how to redesign a website without losing SEO.

6. Ongoing costs to budget for

The build is not the only cost. Plan for these every year:

  • Domain name renewal (for example yourbusiness.co.za)
  • Hosting, which varies with traffic and the type of site
  • Business email, if it is not included with your hosting
  • Maintenance: software updates, security patches, backups and small content changes
  • Paid plugins, themes or third-party services your site depends on
  • Marketing, such as SEO or Google Ads, if you want steady traffic

How to get an accurate quote

The more a developer knows up front, the more accurate the quote. Before you ask for quotes, jot down:

  • What the website must achieve: calls, WhatsApp messages, quote requests, bookings or online sales
  • Roughly which pages you need
  • Features you need now, and ones you might need later
  • Whether you have content and photos, or need help with them
  • Two or three websites you like, and what you like about them
  • Your timeline, and any hard deadline such as a launch or event

Red flags when comparing quotes

  • You will not own your domain or have access to your hosting account
  • No mention of mobile design, SEO basics or analytics
  • No clear scope: which pages, features and revisions are included
  • No plan for what happens after launch
  • Guaranteed "#1 on Google" promises, which nobody can honestly make

The bottom line

The right price is the one that matches what your website needs to do for your business. A cheap site that brings in no enquiries is expensive, and an elaborate site you do not need is wasted money. Start from your goal, brief clearly, and compare quotes on what is included, not just the total.
